How to Prime a Dry Sump
Instructions
o
1
Place a clean oil pan below the engine and remove the high pressure line that is attached to the oil filter adapter plate. Let the line hang over the pan. You will have some oil loss here; but if you use a clean pan, you can save the oil for reuse.
o
2
Remove the drive belt from the oil pump and set it aside. Be careful not to damage the belt as you will need to reinstall it.
o
3
Remove the cover from the oil tank and start filling the system with a high quality oil of your choice. Dry sump systems work well with synthetic oils, but check with the manufacturer of your system for recommendations or requirements.
o
4
Continue to add oil to the system until the oil level becomes constant in the tank. The fill level may be different from system to system so follow the recommendation of the manufacturer on this. Often it is about halfway up the tank, but yours may be different.
o
5
Prime the oil pump by turning the drive pulley slowly in the direction it will turn when the engine is running. Continue turning it until you start to get oil flowing from the high pressure line that you disconnected.
o
6
Reinstall the high pressure line on the fitting in the oil filter adapter on the engine. If you can have someone continue to turn the pump until you are ready to connect the line, it will help keep the line full.
o
7
Refill the oil tank, raising the level to full again. You can now move on to priming the engine. Attach a remote starter switch or get a helper to assist you at this point.
o
8
Reinstall the oil pump drive belt on the pulleys and remove the spark plugs from the engine.
o
9
Remove the coil wire or power to the coil pack to disable the ignition and disconnect the power to the fuel pump either at the fuse box or at the pump to stop fuel from being pumped into the motor.
o
10
Turn the motor over on the starter, either with the remote starter or have an assistant do it for you. Monitor the level in the oil tank as the engine is turned over and continue to fill it as needed to maintain the level in it. Do not let it run dry or you will have to start back at square one. The pump and system are now primed and ready to use.
o
11
Reinstall the spark plugs, reattach the coil wire or power to the coil pack, and enable the power to the fuel pump.
