A rare look at what goes on behind the rear seat of a Tucker 48. It’s a rear engine with a transaxle. The manual clutch pedal and pre-select gear control triggers vacuum/electronic solenoids that work in different combinations to move the transmission lever into its gears. The actuator moves forward and back and side to side to find the correct position. It’s a four speed gearbox with independent suspension transaxle. The driving procedure is to select the next gear in advance, then when it’s time to change gears, you press the clutch pedal and the pedal triggers a 6V switch that opens the correct combination of solenoids which will put the vacuum in the cylinder (either side of the piston) . There is one vertical and one horizontal actuator working in conjunction to find the gear you selected. Timing is everything! This unit is an extremely rare Y1 Tucker Specific (not Cord) unit. If you look closely you can also see one of the remote shock absorbers activated as the torsialstic (no springs) suspension travels up and down as the car drives over uneven ground. Pretty impressive technology especially at its time.
