"I do not recommend vinegar for removal of rust. It is acetic acid, & will have little effect on rust removal. In fact, vinegar's greatest effect on rust is that the water in the vinegar can promote more rust in the steel!

It is especially important not to put aluminum parts in vinegar. Some people put aluminum parts in vinegar, saying it gets them really clean, but the acetic acid in vinegar will react sufficiently with aluminum to ruin machining tolerances for carbs, manifolds, etc. For aluminum, clean with a CAUSTIC cleaner like oven cleaner, not an ACIDIC cleaner like vinegar. Or just a SOLVENT like acetone, gasoline, kerosene, etc. and a non-abrasive cleaner. If you need to etch aluminum slightly for painting, you can use vinegar for that!"

Bem, esta resposta diz algo de concreto. Que o vinagre funciona mas é longe de ser perfeito...

Com mais alguma pesquisa nos imensos foruns britanicos de clássicos, encontrei esta resposta:

Caustic simply is the chemical opposite of acidic. There are different caustic substances, like there are different acidic substance, and like acidic substances, not all are appropriate for cleaning different things. Lye is caustic, most oven cleaner products are caustic. What is generically called "Parts cleaner" is caustic, usually a manufacturer's secret recipe of caustic chemicals and solvents. A basic parts cleaner here is Chem-Dip, which is not likely to be able to be shipped to you, and calling it basic will probably also be a total write-off across the borders.

It might work for you to go to a garage, look around for the parts washer, and ask the mechanic where you can get something like the chemicals in it for a car project you have at home. The parts cleaner at a garage will look something like this:

Meus amigos,

voces sabem onde poderei encontrar este tal ingrediente secreto a venda em Portugal?

Um muito obrigado...
