Mk3 best driving, Mk1 best looking in my opinion. Mk2 rarest (reputedly, but just as difficult to find a Mk1)
However add the swing-spring from the late Mk3 to the Mk1 and you have the best of both, although the Mk3 still has a slightly more powerful engine (different head design). Rotoflex on Mk2 and early/mid Mk3 is good but difficult/costly to maintain. Dynamo on Mk1 easily replaced with alternator. All models negative earth. Better range of "performance" exhaust manifolds available for Mk2/Mk3
Engine is nice and Mk2/Mk3 can be stroked to 2.5 litres fairly easily. Gearbox becomes the weakpoint in that case. Mk1 a little more "revvy". Engine should have modern anti-drain oil filter fitted or big ends will start to go (original filter drains to sump overnight causing delay in oil pressure build up). Crank thrust washers can go as well, check end play on crank pulley by depressing clutch. Chassis very strong but body susceptible to rust. Check truniions have been regularly oiled (EP90), not greased
Get one with overdrive
If you are taller than about 5'10" you may find it a bit cramped.
Can get very hot in the summer - enthusiast won't mind but passenger might.
Day to day maintenance very easy with excellent access through front opening bonnet.
Stromberg carbs have undeserved reputation for causing problem, in my experience if you put an inline filter just before the carbs they won't give you any hassle.
Any well looked after model fitted with overdrive and an electronic ignition system will give you a very reliable classic with enough performance to give you plenty of thrills. I used to do 13,000 miles a year in a Mk1, no problem.
