Such cooperation resulted in Baur building the expensive coupe and convertible versions of the 501 at the same time continuing to build the smaller 700 cabriolet. In the same period built Baur for DKW the DKW 1000SP, also as a coupe and convertible.

To begin with, just like the 501 and 700) the cars were designed to be fully open. But with the sporting character that BMW had acquired, the convertibles were to give the same driving experience, and it showed the fully open version is not stiff enough. Because of this a remedy was a kind of Targa bracket.. The top part was stiff and rigid and could be removed, the rear was soft and could be folded away. This structure would be a defining image for the later BMW Baur TCs. The first BMW's so was made by Baur came from the 02 series. Incidentally, there was also a fully convertible on the basis of the 02 series
Baur produced, among others, 1682 1600-2 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1682 1600-2 end_of_the_skype_highlighting Cabriolets, 200 2002 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 200 2002 end_of_the_skype_highlighting Cabriolets and 2597 E110 700 Sport Cabriolets.
1971 BMW 2002 Baur Cabriolet:
In 1971 they began production of the safer "targa" style body with the 2002. (Targa was a registered Porsche name, so they had to call it something else) Originally an after market option available through BMW dealers, the E21 3 series TC1 was built with full factory authorization, and covered in the factory warranty. The roll-bar version or "Top Cabrio" (TC) continued with the E30 TC2 even after Baur developed the BMW E30 Convertible design for BMW, and which BMW built.
Between 1978 and 1982 a total of 4595 Baur TC were converted

The E21 was succeeded by the E30 in 1982. The TC2 was introduced

There were Series 1 and Series 2 versions of the TC2
Baur Alpina:
When the E30 Cabrio came in in 1986, sales of the Baur TC all but collapsed. Only the 316i's still sold well.
After the E30 came the E36. It was obvious that BMW had an E36 convertible in the pipeline. And despite that the E30 convertible sold much better than the E30 Baur TC, BMW was afraid that a 2-door Baur TC would win customers that otherwise would buy a convertible E36. The plan of Baur to build an E36 Coupe was not to happen. Under the motto "anything better than nothing" was therefore a 4-door convertible.
These TC cars can be built for the owner at any time, after-market; you supply the car to be converted.
TC4:
The TC4 was not a great sales success, Baur set a modest target of just 600 cars per year (the average for 1250 was E30 per year). But the TC4 only achieved 311 sales in 3 years.
TC3:
Then there was the Baur TC3 of 1987, which was stopped by the production of the BMW Z1. The cars were aimed at the same market.
Bitter CD:
In 1971, David R. "Dave" Holls (Opel design boss since 1971; previously assistant to Charles M. "Chuck" Jordan) encouraged Erich Bitter to build the Bitter CD. So Erich Bitter formed Bitter GMBH 1971, specifically for the CD. He started with a one acre site in his home town of Schwelm. Since he didn't have the capital or time to set up his own production facilities, and looked for a proven independent, small scale company to build the CD. He chose Baur as they produced prototypes and limited production runs for several well known German companies. They possessed the necessary experience, had the capacity to build the car, and their build quality was impressive.

The problem for BMW, to compete in Group 4 and 5 a minimum of road cars production was required and Jochen Neerspach (head of BMW-Motorsport) felt BMW had a lack of knowledge in building a mid-engined car. He asked Lamborghini to design and build the car but the whole thing turned into disappointment as Lamborghini was in bad difficulties in the late 70s. Then BMW asked Italdesign & Giugiaro to draw the body, Marchesi to produce the Dallara-Lamborghini chassis and suspension, then at the end of this complex process Baur completed cars.
When production stopped in July 1981only 456 cars were built.

6-series convertible:
Quite who made the E24 6-series convertibles seems to be a bit of a myth. It is certain that some at least were made by Baur. Between 50 and 200 are believed to be around worldwide.
Instead of continuing with the development of the TC3, Baur was given the contract to build the BMW Z1. It also made the Porsche 944 and 968 convertible models as well as the 959 as Porsche didn’t have the capacity.
Baur also constructed the limited edition rally special Sport Quattro for Audi.
