Designers.

With only the engine, the Aura surrounding the Alfa Romeo name would never be what it is today. Design has always been an important factor for Alfa Romeo. In fact, it is the combination of engine and design that has made the marque into the legend it is. The most well known design houses for Alfa Romeo's are Zagato, Bertone, Pininfarina, Carrozzeria Touring, Italdesign, Ghia and the in-house Alfa Romeo Centro Stile. Other Alfa design houses include Vignale, Boano, Castagna and OSI. Others famous italian design houses include Viotti, Allemano. Many of these design houses does not exist today, most notably (with Alfa eyes) is Touring that did masterpieces with the 1900 model. On this page you find the cars and a short story of:

"The search for beauty is the
most natural thing for man"

Ugo Zagato 1890-?
Founder of Carozzeria Zagato 1919

"It's better to be a small boss
than an important employee"

Born 1890 in Gavello, between Padova and Ferrara. Childhood was poor and at the age of 15 he left his hometown and started to work in Köln/Germany in metalworking company. After his military service back in Italy he started at the Italian Varesina bodyworks. Here he was exposed for the first time to car design. At the age of 25 during the first World War Ugo Zagato moved to Torino in order to work with Pomilio, an aircraft construction company. In the next four years he learned everything which should become so important for his later car design: new sophisticated techniques of light and robust construction.

In 1945 together with his sons, Elio (b 1923) and Gianni (b 1929) he started the company "La Zagato".

Ercole Spada (b. 1938)

Zagato's arguably most important postwar designer was Self-taught Ercole Spada who worked for the company 1960-69. His work includes Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ, Lancia Flavia Sport, Alfa TZ1 and TZ2, Alfa Romeo SZ 2600, Lancia Flaminia 3c, Alfa Romeo Junior Z and Lanzia Fulvia Sport). After he left Zagato he most known for the Ford GT40 (1970-76) and BMW 500 and 700 series (1977-83). From 1983 he started to work at IDEA.

Some features associated with Zagato:
1) The truncated tail such as the Alfa Romeo TZ1 and TZ2
2) The "double bubble" roof. Found on some Giulietta SZ.
3) Light all aluminium body

Bertone 1921-

Carrozzeria Bertone (in Turin) was founded in 1912 by Giovanni Bertone (1884-1972). Thanks to his friendship with Vincenzo Lancia he got assignments for construction of auto bodies for the famous houses of the age, Fiat, Ansaldo, Italian etc. Like Pininfarina and Zagato, Bertone is associated with Italian automotive marquees Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Fiat, and Lamborghini. Bertone has also produced designs for BMW, Opel and Volvo. The first contact between Bertone and Alfa Romeo occurred in the Thirties when Bertone built cars on the Tipo 6C2300 chassis.

Giuseppe "Nuccio" Bertone (1912-1997)

Under Nuccio Bertone, Giovanni's son, the company grew. Bertone adopted, "strange", young designers without much experience for professional training. Nuccio had a gift for finding the best in design talent for his company, and the three legendary designers who shaped their careers while at Bertone were hired by Nuccio in succession: Franco Scaglione (the "BATman", 2000 Sportiva), Giorgio Giugiaro ("captured" from Fiat Centro Stile, later he founded Italdesign), and Marcello Gandini ("papa" of Lamborghini Miura, Alfa Montreal, Alfa Carabo, Lancia Stratos, Alfa Navajo and the Lamborghini Countach). Often when talking about Bertone, one talkes about the Scaglione-era, the Giugiaro-era and Gandini-era.

Probably the most famous car (with Alfa eyes at least) from Bertone is the Giulia 105 series GT Coupes, a car that with minor changes existed from 1962-77. Other well known Alfas from Bertone are the 1954 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint and Montreal. The only picture of a non-Alfa car you'll find on this site is an amazingly Beautiful Bertone work that never went into production:

Italdesign 1968-
While still a teenager Giorgetto Giugiaro moved to Turin and attended courses at the Fine Arts Academy. Simultaneous studies in technical design led to an early career which started a Fiat when he was 17. During the years that followed, he moved to Bertone, where he was appointed head of the Styling Department (Maserati 5000 GT, Ferrari 250 GT, Alfa Romeo Giulia GT, Fiat 850 spider, Iso Rivolta, and Grifo). Later he joined Ghia as director of the Styling and Prototype Center (Maserati Ghibli and Mangusta).

In 1968 Giugiaro founded Italdesign with Aldo Mantovani and Luciano Bosio. Besides the specific research on vehicles for the masses (among these, the Fiat Panda, Uno, Croma, Punto, the Lancia Delta, Prisma and Thema, the Seat Ibiza, the Subaru SVX, the Toyota Aristo ... ), Italdesign also carries out concept research for advanced research prototypes and show cars for instance: Megagamma, Alfa Romeo, Taxi, Machimoto, Columbus, Biga and Lucciola.

Giugiaro Design is Giorgetto Giugiaro's studio that designs stuff outside the car industry.

Pininfarina 1930-
Pininfarina Bodied Postwar Cars

The Company was founded by Battista Farina in 1930 in Turin and from the start concentrated on the design and construction of special car bodies. Those were the years of the Alfa Romeo 8 and 6 cylinders, the Hispano Suiza Coupé, the Lancia Dilambda and Astura, the Fiat Ardita and the Lancia Aprilia Coupé.

Battista "Pinin" Farina was born in Turin, November 2, 1893. Pinin means small in Turinese dialect.

Battista started at age 11 working in his brother Giovanni's bodyshop, the "Stabilimenti Farina". During the First World War he supervised the construction of the "Aviatic" trainer planes.. In 1920, he went to the United States to see America and judge first hand the great developments in that country. In Detroit he met with Henry Ford, who asked him to stay in America and work for Ford Motor Company, but Farina preferred to return to Italy.

An interesting fact is that in 1961, the President of the Italian Republic authorized the change of his last name to Pininfarina in consideration of his achievements in social and industrial activities.

After the difficult war years, 1947 was the year of the Cisitalia, the first car to be on permanent display in a modern art museum, the MOMA in New York. His youngest son Sergio (born 1926) entered the company in 1959.
