I have arrived in Lisbon and getting acquainted, it seems it will be some time until I can get my residency so that I can get my drivers license and register a motorcycle.

I want to ask what the local rules would be about having a motorcycle registered in the UK here in Lisbon? If it were still in date with valid MOT, tax, and insurance, how long could I still ride it in Lisbon?

I understand that it would be preferred that I transfer the registration to Portugal quickly, but it may be months before I am legal myself, and I have an opportunity to get one from a friend in the UK.

I have translated this to Portuguese online, so please excuse any mistakes.

thank you very much!

Hello.I dont know if you speak portuguese or not,but if you speak,or have a friend that can do that to you, maybe its better if you go to a police station near by your place, and ask the officers about your problem. The laws are always changing, but until some years ago,you could had a car or bike, with international plate and drove them in portugal.I dont know how the laws are know. But the officers may know something about it.Hope it was helpfull.
Regards.

if you still have residence on uk you can drive as long you want, otherwise you have to go to IMTT, where you can legalize your situation. take care

Thanks for the info, where is IMTT?

it is true I have some history with auto, my grandfather did machine work for the industry in Detroit, but I doubt that has much to do with Collin?

I don't yet speak much Portuguese, Daniel, I doubt I could get thru the conversation without being arrested! ;)

boa vinda das tudos idéias

obrigado!

Nathan, you got the best answer, i.e. go to the IMTT.
However, it is easier if you contact an insurance company.
It is possible to register a vehicle online but only after you are legalized.
Please try to learn a little portuguese, and never use online translators. You can't figure out what a mess it sounds... I'd say if you hadn't wrote it in english nobody would have understood.
Don't be afraid, most of our cops speak english a little.

Hugs!

Hi Nathan,
Are you staying in Portugal just temporary or for good? I think that if you just for 6 months, You do not need to go throught the Crazy portuguese registration system, keeping your U.K registration and insureance. However if you stay longer than 1 year, than you should do the registration in Portugal, but you should be alerted that your vehicle even if it is a classic car/bike (more 25 yeard old), you will pay taxes and annual circulation fee (IUC) as a brand new vehicle. Besides this I hope you can enjoy the country.
